The Author Harald Bludau
Forward
During the investigation of my
ancestors I realised that our name
"Bludau"
was given documentary evidence already in April 17th
1298.
On April
17th
1998
we will celebrate our anniversary = 700 years old.
In the book "Oberland,
Ermeland, Natangen and Barken", dated 1901 and written by
"Prof. Dr. Alois Bludau, a place is mentioned in the district
Braunsberg/Ostpreussen
bearing the name Bludau.
Due to Dr. med. Josef Bludau's
participation as ship's doctor on the ship
"MS-Schwabenland" during the expedition
"Deutsche Antarktische Expedition 1938/39",
departure from Hamburg dated
17.12.1938 ( at -13°C ), and
arrival in Hamburg dated 12.04.1939 in the evening = 117 days,
our name "Bludau" has been immortalised at the South Pole by the name
"Bludau Berge = 2400".

Copy of the
original
Extract of the treatise upon the
colonisation of the Ermland
by Prof. Röhrich
The document is dated Mai
25th
1310.
According to
which bishop Eberhard von Ermland with the approval of the Kapitels signed
over the field Klopotyten and the third part of the meadow Paringe (64 hides
measured) to the youngest one of the Lichtenauer
brothers,
Hermann von Bludau
and his legal heirs and successors in
exchange for a
field given up in Pogesanien, which bishop Heinrich I had
transferred to him
once.
The surname "von
Bludau",
which
Hermann,
the first owner of the field
Klopotyten had,
makes it probable that his origin is Böhmen,
where places with this names can
be found in the districts Czaslau und Lusweis.
It could be that already under
bishop Anselm, who visited Böhmen several times as papal legate, the
Lichtenaus went to the Ermland,
since on
April 17th
1298 the name Hermann dictus Bludau
was mentioned already.
During the years 1304 and 1305
Herman was steward of the chapter. After he was officially given the estate
as a loan, to which he gave its name, he is not mentioned any more. Probably
he died after 1310.
The brothers Alexander and
Johannes von Bludau are undoubtedly his sons, since his direct successors
only had the right to bear his name.
Alexander von Bludau is
mentioned the first time in May 14th
1308 and the last time in February
4th
1322. In a charter dated October 15th
1317 he was named steward of the chapter.
Johannes von Bludau is
mentioned twice, 25th
of January and 12th
of June 1314.
Under bishop Johannes Stryprock
(1355 - 1373) a so-called Heinrich von Bludau acquired Schulzengut (the
estate of the village mayor) and Schulzenamt (the post of the village mayor)
in the village Kerschdorf near Heilsberg.
About the year 1374 the knights
Hermann and Eberhard von Bludau can be traced in Braunsberg. One part,
however, stayed on the family estate and acquired the neighbouring
Dittersdorf as well.
At the beginning of the 15th
century both estates belonged to the knight Eberhard von Bludau, who had
three sons, Johannes, Maternus and Konrad and a daughter, who was already
married at that time.
In the meantime the estate had
been grown in a village, and the farmers had to pay tax to the lords of the
manor.
It seems, that the owner's
- von Bludau's - pecuniary circumstances were not any more the best at the
beginning of the 15th
century, and the wars of the following time destroyed them completely.
Towards the end of the 15th
century
the estate is in the possession of the family "von Baysen"; the family „von
Bludau“ is lost without trace in the chaos of the war.

Note:
Ermland / Warmia (german/polish) = Former region in central East-Prussia.
It stretches
in a triangle from “Frischen Haff” (Eastsea) southeastwards until the masurischen Sea plateau.
The Ermland
–the Old Prussian Gau Warmien- was established in 1243 as one of the four
dioceses of the Ordenlandes and was colonized mainly with Silesian farmers
by the Bishops (who were Imperial Princes since the 14th
Century-). The farmers have kept their dialect and Catholic beliefs right up
until the present.

West of Bischdorf on the
right bank of Baude were situated the 90 hides, which Heinrich Fleming on 14th
of March 1297 signed over as estate according to the rights of Kulm to
Martin von Rutenberg, the son of the deceased Bartolomäus von Rutenberg,
where rather soon arose the villages Groß- und Klein-Rautenberg. Two months
later, on 15th
of May 1297 the estate Kurau received its privilege. In addition to the 40
hides, which were situated in the fields Gechriten (Jägeritten), Kurwen (Kurau)
and Clopetiten, and which included one third of the meadow Poziegen, the
Bishop transferred to Gerko (Gerhard), one of the brothers of Lichtenau, the
field as replacement for his previous estate in Watinin (Wagten) at the
Drewenz, which he had transferred to the Bishop. The today's village Kurau
is only one part of the old estate, which reached up to the Fuchsberg and
the Kurauschen Moosbruch in the north, and which was partly devastated
during the wars in the 15th
century and became a forest again. - It is supposed, that, at the same
time, when Heinrich I. documentated Martin von Rautenberg in his estate, he
gave the Knight Dietrich von Ulsen 100 hides, which rather soon were divided
into the estates Heinrichsdorf and Vierzighuben. They, as well, disappeared
during the wild periods, which overtook the Ermland in the second part of
the 15th
century.
However, they were found again
two hundred years later, but one part of the hides, today's Forstbelauf
Riederwald, remained sovereign forest and the other part became the
village Bludau.
In summer 1298 Bishop
Heinrich Fleming again left his diocese in order to go to Central Germany.
During the last days of October in this year he spent his time at Eichsfeld.
In September 1299 and even at the end of February 1300 he still could be
identified in Thüringen. Probably he wanted to obtain new settlers for his
far-off diocese. Not long after his return, his final hour came on July 15th
1300. His mortal remains were buried under a stone of the altar in the
village church of Frauenburg.
The Bishop's body turned to dust
a long time ago and his tombstone only partly resisted the rough and tumble.
One fragment, without the upper part, was found between the altar of the
middle aisle and the first northern column. However, what Bishop Heinrich I.
did for the settlement of Ermland, still remains unforgettable.
Page: 82
After 1772, that is during the
Prussian period, only from the forests Stemkies or Stehneken between
Sonnwalde und Lichtenau came the village Steinkerwalde by uprooting.
Thus the chapter of Ermland
became of equal rank with the Bishops, when finding a solution for the
important mission to open up and cultivate the Fürstbistum. And the results
encouraged further activities and creation.
In the area westwards of
Baude, which, around the year 1317, was completely under the sovereign
authority of the chapter Frauenburger, Bishop Eberhard, Heinrichs I.'
successor assigned on May 25th
1310 the youngest brother of Lichtennau,
Hermann von Bludau,
the field Klopotiten and the third part of the meadow Puringe as farmyard of
Kulm in return for the field Zxgeniten and Swarboniten , which Heinrich I.
in Pogetanien conferred to him one time (the region of the present
Waltersmühl at the Passarge).
The estate
Bludau, as it was named, according to its first owner, bloomed very quickly
to a village, the present church village Bludau. -
The south-west part of the
region, which had not been bestowed at that time, was conferred by the
chapter to a so called Hermann Kurrseg (a coach-maker) for the foundation of
the village (Alt-) Münsterberg, which received its signed and sealed
document on July 12th
1321.
The area between Marz and Baude
of the Fürstbistum Ermland formed from now on the chapter Kammeramt
Frauenburg; Terra Wewa became the second Kammeramt of the chapter, the
Kammeramt Mehlsack. After the division of southern Ermland in 1346, the
third one, Allenstein, joint Ermland. Even the episcopal area was divided
into such districts. With the progressive settlement of the country the
seven Kammerämter Braunsberg, Heilsberg, Wormditt, Guttstat, Seeburg, Bötzel
and Wartenburg were founded little by little. This division in different
Kammerämter was performed in order to have a better overview and an easier
administration. At the top of each Kammeramt was a Kämmerer (Chamberlain),
whose main task was the administration of the district subordinated to him.
These Kämmerer, who were thoroughly reliable and trustworthy people came
probably - at least during the first time - exclusively from the
long-established inhabitants, to whom he had about the same relationship, as
the village major to the inhabitants of the German villages, with the only
difference being, that the district, which the Kämmerers had to survey, was
much larger; a whole gau or a subdivision, a region, which later ......

The fear of attacks from
Lithuania was the reason for the transfer of the chapter to the sure
Guttstadt in November 20th
1347. However, Glottau remained, as it was mentioned in the
transfer-document, title and mother-church "because of the adoration of the
holiest altar sacrament, by which wonders happened and incited people to go
on pilgrimage." The Kolegiatstift had remained to Guttstadt until 1810.
During the settlement of the
country, above all, the protectors stood by the sovereignty's side with
advice and assistance. A great number of respected men fulfilled the
important duties of a diocese protector under Bishop Eberhard: Otto von
Rossen, Johannes, Bruder (Deutscher Orden) Konrad von Altenburg,
Alexander von Bludau,
Brother Rutcher, Brother Friedrich von Liebenzelle; the longest period
fulfilled Otto von Rossen, who is traceable as protector of the church of
Ermland from June 20th
1305 until July 4th
1307 and again from July 8th
1311 until March
26th
1313. As a reward for his
loyal services for the diocese, Bishop Eberhard, on March 23rd
1313, transferred to him and his two children of both sex from his second
legal wife Gernscha 44 hides near Wormditt as feudal tenure according to the
right of Kulm, nowadays divided into the village Albrechtsdorf and the Gut
Adelig Albrechtsdorf, the later one now belonging to the Gut Lemitten.
In other respects the
Bishop knew as well how to reward loyal services. His personal servant, of
Prussian blood, received on July 13th
1313, in the field Wozo near Benern, a small estate of 6 hides (which soon
after was called Sadluten), and which later on, was nominated the village
Gronau. Benern itself, which Otto von Fischau founded on the field Dissemen
and the adjoining meadows, received its privilege on July 13th
1316. The foundation of the places Dietrichsdorf and Voigtsdorf near
Arnsdorf, Groß Grünheide and Klein Grünheide near Wormditt was realised
under Bishop Eberhard as well. The estate Dietrichsdorf, which was strongly
attacked by the Lithuanians in 1311, was transferred by the Bishop to his
nephews Dietrich and Heinrich, sons of Arnolds von Neiße, in October
3rd
1320. Lokator of the village Voigtsdorf became Heinrich von Kaltstein, to
whom it was transferred on July 25th
1329, at the time of Sedisvakanz and during his time as Bishop of
Ermsland, by the protector of the diocese, the Monk Ordensbruder Friedrich
von Liebenzelle. The estates Groß- und Klein Grünheide, 21 hides in the
field Lehlaufen, were given to the children of the already dead Johannes
Fleming, his son Albert and his son-in-law Albert von Bas ......
